$12.5 million in funding for eMeter (Funding)
Smart meter management specialist eMeter has raised $12.5 million from Sequoia Capital and Foundation Capital. eMeter has partnered with Siemens, Oracle, IBM, and Accenture and other companies (see our archives to track eMeter's recent partnerships) that want to use its software to parse the tremendous and constant flow of information between utilities and smart meters. "We have a unique offering for full integration of the smart grid into the existing utility infrastructure," says eMeter CEO Gary Bloom. "This includes demand response programs and curtailment to cut back the amount of power being used when it becomes important, like it is now with the situation on the East Coast -- all of the blackouts and brownouts happening now during the heat wave." As we've reported several times, the The Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Energy have been working behind the scenes to ensure that the blue and white Energy Star label really does mean what it says. A new system of regulations -- expected to be announced in September, and implemented in January -- would require that all products be tested in approved, independent labs before receiving the Energy Star designation. The independent labs will be required to maintain meticulous records, and ensure the independence of their employees. Manufacturers will have to pay the fee.
"This administration is committing to having Energy Star be a credible tool for consumers," said Kathleen Hogan, the Energy Department's Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency. She said the labs will need to become accredited to test particular product categories using standardized procedures. "You are seeing an important refinement to the Energy Star program that will keep making it better." (Source: Washington Post, July 10, 2010)
